The Tribe

The Ukrainian filmmaker Miroslav Slaboshpitsky is participating for the first time in Cannes with his feature debut, The Tribe (ПЛЕМЯ / Plemya), that will compete at La Semaine de La Critique. The director who has been already awarded for his previous short films at Locarno, Rotterdam and Berlin is challenging the audience with an unusual and extraordinary technique, his film is entirely shot in sign language and there will be no subtitles or voice over.

According to the official release the leading character of the film, a deaf mute teenager enters a specialized boarding school where, to survive, he becomes part of a wild organization – The Tribe. His love for one of the concubines will unwillingly lead him to break all the unwritten rules within the Tribe’s hierarchy and centers on a young man struggling to find his place among the social hierarchy.

As Slaboshpitsky states, the film doesn’t need any explanation because for Love and Hatred You Don’t Need Translation.
