According to the official release: The Great Gatsby by Baz Luhrmann with Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan and Tobey Maguire is the opening film of the 66th Festival de Cannes and in all the cinemas in France on May, 15th. For the third time in the last five years the festival’s opener will be a Hollywood’s big-budget production, after “Up” in 2009 and “Robin Hood” in 2010. It will also be the second time that a 3D film opens the festival.

Baz Luhrmann on Gatsby

Luhrmann’s first reaction was: “It is a great honor for all those who have worked on The Great Gatsby to open the Cannes Film Festival. We are thrilled to return to a country, place and festival that has always been so close to our hearts, not only because my first film Strictly Ballroom was screened there 21 years ago, but also because F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote some of the most poignant and beautiful passages of his extraordinary novel just a short distance away at a villa outside St. Raphael.”
