Greek Film Academy 2013 Winners

Last night was the 4th ceremony of the Greek Film Awards and Boy Eating the Bird’s Food by Ektoras Lygizos was the Best Feature Film according to the Greek Film Academy. He also has been awarded as the Best Director for first Feature Film and the protagonist Yiannis Papadopoulos won the award for Best Leading Actor. Lygizos’ film that has already participated in Karlovy Vary Festival last year had also won the FIPRESCI award in Thessaloniki Film Festival and also will be the Greek selection for next year’s Foreign Language Oscar.
Another festival’s favorite Thanos Anastopoulos’ film The Daughter that participated at the recent Berlin Film Festival left with the awards of Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Cinematography for Ilias Adamis . As it was reported after the announcement of the nominations, Menelaos Karamaghiolis’ J.A.C.E. was the big favorite of this year although the film earned only 2 of the major awards, those of Supporting Actor, Ieronymos Kaltestanos, and Supporting Actress, Cora Karvouni, and the majority of the technical awards too.
There has been a great criticism about the selection of these films since till the day of the ceremony the majority of them, Lygizos’ film included, didn’t have a theater release so it was impossible to be watched by the general public. This fact combined with the Academy members reluctance to vote, just 104 out of 240, and the lack of interest about the awards by the viewers, even the professionals too, create some major issues to a foundation that exists for only four years and seems already old.
