Herz Frank (1926 – 2013)

Herz Frank was one of the most influential Eastern European documentarists. He was born and raised in Riga, Latvia and even after the annexation of his country to the Soviet Union he tried to work in his native country and language. His career gained international acclaim in 1978 with his film Ten Minutes Older (Par Desmit Minutem Vecaks) where he witnessed the faces of a group of children watching a puppet show. The film is a great example on observation and capturing real life in a true and genuine way that was groundbreaking. Herz Frank once said “The first rule of a documentary filmmaker is: Have the patience to observe life!
