Bonello’s Saint-Laurent for the Oscars

Bertrand Bonello’s Saint-Laurent has been selected to represent France in the Best Foreign Language Film category in the upcoming Academy Awards.
Bonello’s controversial biopic of the French fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent premiered in competition at the 67th Cannes Film Festival. Gaspard Ulliel impersonates the designer while the other main protagonists of the film are Jérémie Renier as Pierre Bergé, Louis Garrel as Jacques de Bascher and Léa Seydoux as Saint Laurent’s muse Loulou de la Falaise.
Bertrand Bonello has always worked on provocative and extreme themes and he became well known with his second feature film Le Pornographe (The Pornographer). His previous appearance in the official competition of Cannes was in 2011 with L’Apollonide (House of Tolerance).
The Oscars nominations will be announced on Januarty 15th 2015 and the last time that France was nominated was in 2010 with Jacques Audiard’s Un Prophète (A Prophet). It should be noted that Abdellatif Kechiche’s La vie d’Adèle (Blue Is the Warmest Color) – winner of the 66th Cannes Palme d’Or – ha been initially considered as the big favorite for the selection.
